Becoming in the Middle

Scripture
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 1:6

Devotional

Most of us like clear before and after stories.

Before she was a mess.
After she had it all together.

The problem is that real life happens in the middle. God starts something in us, then lets us walk through years that feel unfinished, ordinary, or flat out confusing. That middle space is where becoming happens.

Maybe you feel like that right now. You believe in God, you pray, you try, yet your life does not look like the neat version you imagined. You still have bills, grief, and habits you wish you could drop overnight. You want to be the woman in the after photo, while God is still working on the inside.

Philippians chapter 1 verse 6 does not say you have to complete the work. It says God will carry it on. Your job is to keep showing up with your real self. His job is to keep shaping you.

Becoming is not a glow up. It is not a rush to look better, earn more, or impress people who are not paying your bills. Becoming is the slow, steady work of letting God reorder your heart, one choice at a time.

Some days that looks holy. You feel strong, peaceful, and focused.
Some days that looks messy. You cry in the shower, eat dinner in bed, and wonder if God is tired of hearing the same prayer.

He is not.

God is not irritated with your process. He already knew how long it would take. He knew about the years you would feel stuck, the detours you would take, and the days you would want to quit. He still chose you, and he still promises to finish what he started.

You are allowed to be a work in progress and still be loved, called, and useful. Becoming is not what happens after you fix yourself. Becoming is what God is doing in you right now, even in the middle.

Prayer

God, thank you for starting a good work in me. I confess that I get frustrated with my own process and I feel behind. Help me trust that you are still working, even when I cannot see it. Show me one small step of obedience today and give me the courage to take it. I place my becoming in your hands again. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Journal Prompts

  1. Where do I feel “behind” in life right now

  2. What evidence can I see that God has already been working in me over the past year
