Showing Up

Choosing Discipline Over Excuses

One of my goals this year is to get in better shape. I want to do it for myself, for my family, and for God. Scripture is direct about why that matters. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, we are reminded that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and that we are called to honor God with our bodies. If I want to serve well and stay present for the people I love, I cannot keep treating my health like an optional side project.

There are seasons when life asks for more presence than energy. The gym. Work. Family. Church. Responsibilities. You can list a dozen reasons to pull back, delay, or check out for the day. For me, today was one of those days. I did not want to go to the gym.

I came up with excuse after excuse. Too much work to do. The house needed cleaning. I could go tomorrow. Then I caught myself. Tomorrow is how I drift. So, I put my shoes on and headed to the gym. I showed up. I worked out.

And you know what, I did not regret it. I walked out refreshed and glad I went.

That is what I am practicing this year. Showing up before I feel ready; choosing the next right step instead of waiting on motivation.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us there is “a time for every activity under heaven.” Some seasons are marked by growth and momentum. Others are marked by endurance. Endurance seasons do not look impressive. They are built through discipline, through repeated choices to show up and stay engaged when you would rather shut down.

It looks like going to work when you would rather call out. It looks like caring for your home when you would rather ignore it. It looks like staying engaged with your family when you feel drained. It looks like getting to church when it would be easier to stay on the couch.

Scripture reminds us, “Let us not grow weary of doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). Weariness is real. Discipline carries you when motivation runs out.

Today was not about a perfect workout. It was about showing up and being consistent. Some days, those small steps are what move you forward.

Apply

  • Where have I been pulling back, and what would showing up look like there?

  • Pick one area today where you feel tempted to check out. Show up in one simple, finished way.

Prayer

God, help me stay engaged in what matters. Train my heart toward discipline, not excuses, and help me finish what You put in front of me. Amen.
